Understanding Weight Gainers:
Supplement Information

 by SupplementsWow.com- Copyright © 2008

Of the three body types, the ectomorph is probably the most envied, with their naturally skinny bodies. They can each pretty much eat anything they want and never get fat. As great as it sounds, the same quick metabolism that keeps them slim also makes it extremely hard for an ectomorph to gain weight and muscle, resulting in less strength and endurance.

If gaining weight is your goal, the source of extra calories you are put into your body is vitally important. Putting on healthy weight takes more than large amounts of high fat fast snacks and junk food. Weight gainer supplements are designed specifically for the hard-gainers.

If gaining weight is your goal, the source of extra calories you are put into your body is vitally important. Putting on healthy weight takes more than large amounts of high fat fast snacks and junk food. Weight gainer supplements are designed specifically for the hard-gainers.

Today's weight gainers are specialized supplements formulated to conveniently provide a combination of high quality protein as the base and carbohydrates and fats added for building lean body mass. They differ in ratios and ingredients depending on the manufacturer. Most weight gainer products have a pretty high ratio of carbs to protein, usually about 3: or 4: to 1. Look for products that provide a ratio of 2 carbs to 1 protein blend that are superior to regular protein shakes and contain:

  • Carbohydrates - primary source should be maltodextrin, less than 40grams of sugar.
  • Protein - a combination of whey and casein dairy protein, with egg protein and certain amino acids added by some manufacturers.
  • Small amounts of unsaturated fats, necessary for hormone production, digestion, cells and nerves.
  • Full spectrum of vitamins & minerals that may include potassium, chromium, creatine and glutamine.
  • No fructose or aspartame

Weight gainers work best with a complete and nutrious diet and intense training program. They can be taken in place of meals, between meals for extra calories, before and after your workout. Certain people should not take weight gainers, such as diabetics, who may experience increased insulin levels due to certain ingredients in these supplements. For this reason, all people of every fitness level should speak to their doctor before taking any type of weight gainer supplement.
